They usually mean something like "because it's hand painted, there will be small differences", but in rare cases they truly mean "promotional look only".
And some companies just fuck you over (pic related).

I only have it because it's so shitty and battered up by now that I won't ever be able to sell it, so it's my body for rolling heads and commission photos.
The posing is bad, resin quality is meh and after a few months in a dark room the resin already yellowed unevenly (my room is pretty much pitch black most of the time and all my other dolls have aged really well).
Granted it was a cheap body, but still.
They disappeared for a while and have been back for a year? now.
No clue if they changed.
