I'd also say don't use any fully-enclosed bookcases or shelves, I always felt it looked weird to put toys on them. I like floating shelves, but if you can't/don't want to drill into your walls, I'd recommend some ladder shelves like this. They're nice and open to make your displays feel less cluttered, and the different shelf sizes make it feel more dynamic, and gives you easier access if you're the kind of person who actually likes to take stuff down and play with it once in a while. Stay away from glass cases/detolfs, toys almost never look good in them.
