As an added note, I think that them trying to stay slavishly close to robot form for springer, but going only halfway with his copter mode and nearly completely ignoring his car mode concept was part of the problem.

It actually makes me wonder if the swiveling shoulder pads were because they originally wanted to stick to the IDW design but ruled it out (too much weight?) as the yellow sections on his shoulders were his bumper, not fenders in the concept.

I never said a figure shouldn't have a primary inspiration. Almost every figure will. It just shouldn't have an ONLY inspiration. Like faux-panel laden, flat shaded, horrifically overengineered nuMPs that attempt to exactly replicate Sunbow cels at any cost.
