I think they were just products of their time and in the making of DiC ARAH the Hasbro guys stated Eco Warriors was inspired from Captain Planet (Eco Warriors came out at the peak of Captain Planets media boom) a lot of what 90s Joe was doing seemed to be trying to find a market that would stick and they were just chasing the theme/trends like Ninja Force to TMNT/Power Rangers or Mega Marines = Kenner's Aliens(The name should make it obvious but the slogan for the TV ads and card backs was "The bug-hunt is on!") and so on.
