You'll need to be more specific as to what you find fun to pose and play with, but some general ideas:
>Transformers
>relatively cheap to disgustingly expensive, with the fun coming from engineering and ingenuity of the transformations, sometimes works as well as a puzzle as an action figure
>Marvel Legends/McFarlane/SW Black Series
>Fun but wildly varying quality across figures and lines, mostly the same level of paint apps and the like, usually still worth the $25ish you'll see them at retail
>Mafex/Mezco/SHF/Figma/
>Much higher price point for the scale, but very good quality, often much better engineering and posability, definitely worth looking into if it's a property you like
>Super7
>Somewhere inbetween the last two in quality/price/play value/etc, most value comes from the love the makers have for the toys with including tons of obscure bits
>Sentinel/SoC/Diaclone/big robot toys
>Often very expensive, but almost always worth it, insane quality and finish, but the price can very easily be overwhelming
>RD/METAL BUILD
>Once again expensive, but slavishly accurate to source material or excitingly redesigned to modern sensibilities with a fuckload of accessories, older, much cheaper but still fantastic releases available secondhand
I'm sure there are others that people will suggest, but I don't think you can really go wrong with just popping into a gamestop and grabbing something cheap that looks cool to start out. TBS figs are pretty widely available and something like the recent ROTJ Boba is a fantastic starting point. You can also find import figures for cheap in the BST or on Mandarake, and domestic stuff can be got on sites like dorkside, BBTS, and Entertainment Earth. Just poke your head into the generals and don't be a fag, friend.
