Even the best actors will get lazy if they're allowed to, which is probably what happened to most of the guys in Devastation. People love to admonish a perfectionist, but the proof is in the pudding, as they say. I can criticize the 1986 Transformers movie for a number of things, but the voice acting is not one of them. It is, quite effectively, perfect. And it's definitely Cullen's best performance as Prime, by a wide margin.
>>11863028I recently re-watched Beast Wars with some friends, and one thing that has aged like a fine wine about that show is the voice acting. Everyone is chewing the scenery, and it's fantastic. A bunch of the best performances are just Scott McNeil talking to himself, but the rest of the cast are still pulling their weight.
Like, there's a bit in season 2 where Primal is giving Silverbolt a lecture in his ready room, and both of them are completely locked in. They're selling this romantic fling between a robot bird-dog and a robot black widow without a hint of tongue in cheek. Primal ends the discussion by delivering the line "I'll send Cheetor to bring in the spider-woman" with a completely straight face. If it had been a modern show or movie, there would have been an awkward pause while Primal looked directly at the camera and says, "Wow, i can't believe I just said that!?? LOL SO RANDOM!" Beast Wars' writing wasn't ashamed of itself in the least, but what really helped sell that were the performances, for sure.
