Consider if it’s ideal animation had its shavings behaving identical to ferrofluid in movement and the spines extend a la Silcoon/Cascoon. Containing fluid is nit needed as they can be weightless enough to behave like a fluid, or potentially the shavings are porous and wick moisture on command or when holding a specific charge
