I had a pet female one when I was a kid, her coat got extremely fluffy and big during the winter and her whiskers for the lack of a better term, as in the same hair that grows from Mega Delphox's cheeks got incredibly big and looked something akin to a beard as well, granted Delphox is also based on fennec foxes instead of red ones like the one I had as a pet, but the same sort of applies there to a lesser extent. The "beard" mane is just something foxes of both sexes have.
