It just feels like a plot device to attract people who would never normally watch it for ratings, like it's a token feature of a series
Good franchises don't rely on pandering, but actual character storytelling. Don't just make the guy gay, make it a part of him and have him have internal conflicts just like any other straight man
But that's just me, Pokemon only cares for those whales who spend thousands on merch of their husbando/waifu
