Doing something new but screwing up at it (perhaps due to lack of experience) still damages a piece of work. Doing the same thing but never improving it just shows a lack of self awareness or lack of passion.
On the flipside, a new thing executed well can be so effective as to potentially create entire subgenres. While doing one general thing but improving on it is probably one of the most intelligent and based things a developer can do. It also shows a respect for fans and a passion for the creative work involved.
