Although, interestingly enough, he started to put \ in front of the ~ at one point in one chat, nullifying the formatting. All by himself, without me teaching him. But it doesn't seem to be permanent behaviour, pic related is fresh. Mostly unrelated to your problem but I found it interesting enough to share.
Basically, if you don't want your text to be crossed out, write like this\~ It nullified the formatting.
