I don't understand there are either revisionists or children in this thread saying people didn't seek them out in the past which is a blatant lie. I stumbled on an old forum around the release of RS with a bunch of misinformation and people arguing whether shiny pokemon came back from GSC, methods and odds. Around gen 3 shiny hunting was a thing with a notable community. It wasn't mainstream like it is now but it was certainly something people actively participate it. Ponyta kid was not notable for shiny hunting but for his reaction which at first was mocked before it became a profitable category in streaming. I used to hate how easy shinies had become but when my nephew caught as many shinies in PLA in a few days as I have in all my time I understood that, just like making games easier, it's all about making children enjoy the games. Only 1/8192 shinies matter to me but seeing a shiny Ambipom casually show up in an outbreak and making my little nephew happy is fine too. I'm actually going to show him the Scyther I just caught in FireRed.
