Well, you seem like you want to put in the effort OP so I'll try to help you out here. You have a fuck ton to learn, and I really do hope you are a fast learner. Here's a bunch of shit you can do.
Look up pokemon showdown on google, it's a battle simulator you can make your own teams on in a couple seconds, do this once you've learned all the basics, you can practice a ton on there.Look up
smogon.com as well, they haven't updated with X & Y info yet, but you can still find previous generation pokemons old sets, some of which will still be viable Make sure you're looking at 5th gen stuff. (black and white). The thing that sucks the most here is that it's doubles. Doubles is the most competitive and also the hardest to learn at the same time. Go to youtube and look up VGC 2012 pokemon battles, and watch the double battles in the related videos. Double battles are all about making the pokemon that are side by side synergize with each other. You're also going to need to look up EV training and how to do it, then look up IV's as well as IV breeding in 6th generation. It couldn't heart to look up Pokemon lives/showodwn lives on youtube as well because those are videos of people playing the game live while thinking through and talking about their moves. They can be very informative sometimes. Best of luck to you, if you have any questions I may be willing to answer them depending on how lengthy the answer would be.
