Pokemon literally doesn't need more story than Gen 1 or Gen 2. Story and a larger amount of characters add nothing to these games, especially when Game Freak can't write for shit. SM would've been somewhat ok if the story culminated in you fighting the UBs. But no, they couldn't even do that, they had to focus on the girl you babysit throughout the game so she could deal with family issues. Other JRPGs at the very least manage to have entertaining stories. I can play through Dragon Warrior VII no problem because the game knows when to leave the player the fuck alone.
If Game Freak wants to flex their writing boner so much then they should just stick to writing background lore the player can find on their own terms.
