It turns out that slab templates from the templates mod, both vertical and horizontal, don't actually block light passing through. So you can hide lighting inside the walls and have it show through anyway.
And if you're using shaders that allow for colored lighting (it might change depending on the shader but it works for complementary at least), the light that waterframes naturally emit can be "dyed" if you have a colored light nearby, even if it's behind a slab template like pic related
