It's why games like Wizardry and SMT had alignments that had minimal mechanic importance beyond what classes they could be, what temples they can be revived or healed at, or what demons would join you/what characters could be in your party. You're imagining a character refusing to join a part with a good Law guy in it. It's why flavor exists.
Even in games without that but with player-made characters, like Etrian Odyssey or Dragon Quest III/Ix, imagining the blank slates you created interacting with each other is part of the fun. I think one of Pokemon's few strengths is being able to imagine your character on their own having their own adventure, each pokemon you catch is part of your own story.
