Is it worthwhile making a fangame or is it better just to make an original thing?

I’ve had ideas in my head for ages which started out as fakemon and characters for a fake region but the more I thought about it the more ideas I had which could be fleshed out differently.
Problem is I’m not the best at coding although I do love character design. Using pokemon essentials seems like it’d make things way easier and I could fit this into a pokemon world just fine but pokemon fangames keep being taken down and I’d be devastated if my game got taken down before people could play it.
What do you guys think? Also I wish you a fantastic day or night
