Would you use golduck over kyogre because golduck is awesome and kyogre is just wailord with fins? Would you take the 80% effectiveness route when you know it makes the difference between getting 200 mega energy and 175? What if you want to duo something with a friend? Will you choose the sub-optimal route when you are shouldering half the burden and he's counting on you to pull your weight?
Ultimately, this is niantic's fault for making the basic act of leveling up your pokemon an insane investment. If it was just a difference of an extra hour grinding xp like it should be, then he could just have both ready so he can pick the cool one in low pressure scenarios and pick the optimal one in high pressure scenarios. Unfortunately, it takes an absolute shitload of stardust and candy to level up your pokemon, which means he has to pick ONE of them to invest in.
