Between Go, the main games, the TCG, the merchandise, and the anime (which also advertises the main games and merchandise), TPC makes more money than ever before.

The numbers would suggest otherwise, Pokemon saw a massive resurgence with Gen 7. It wasn't just game sales that saw a rise, but merchandise sales as well.

Natural fad decay.

And games are only part of Pokemon and don't completely define it. The anime, trading cards, toys, and other merchandise also make a fuckton of money. So much that the franchise made more money in the past two years than ever before.

Gen 6 was about as formulaic as Pokemon games come, and look what happened: Yo-Kai Watch stole its thunder because it actually brought something new and unique to the monster collecting genre.

Gen 7 shook things up and the results speak for themselves; the franchise generated more revenue in the past 2 years than it has in history, and Yo-Kai Watch is now pretty much irrelevant.

Unless Game Freak/TPC want their thunder stolen again, they're probably going to shake things up again in Gen 8.
