Nobody ever talks about it, but Brock being the first gym leader in gen 1 was a horrible game design choice. If you picked Bulbasaur or Squirtle, you're encouraged to over-rely on them from the start. If you picked Charmander, you're railroaded into catching Mankey because nothing else is good against Rock. What's worse than any of that though, is the fact that it completely invalidates Bug as the "only useful in the earlygame" type.
Sabrina should have been the first gym leader instead.
