Ash showed competence and a level head that we haven't seen since Diamond/Pearl. Pikachu vs Bunnelby didn't make Ash look like trash like Snivy did, and his companions, so far, aren't raging annoyances.
While the anime will always have rather large flaws, it's hard to deny some seasons are better than others. In my opinion, BW was the worst of them all. They reset Ash to levels never done before and on top of it, his appearance looked outright terrible and dorky.
He actually looks cool again.
Also the Garchomp episode made him look like he usually does in the movies and was just great in general.
Here's hoping to this season being decent or even good.
