The gender of the Pokemon is literally just another value attached to them. No different than their stats, moves, or name. And a Pokemon's gender does, in fact, have situational uses in combat, such as through Attract, competitive, and in some cases like Indeedee or Meowstic, completely alters the Pokemon's battle performance and role entirely.
