I had such fond memories of this game. I've been playing pokemon since gen 1, I bought a gameboy pocket and Pokemon Blue with my saved up birthday money when I was 8 years old and played every generation. Heart Gold came out in my first year of university, and me and some of my friends and even my girlfriend were all into competitive battling at the time, and I put in hundreds of hours on my HG gamecard. I had extremely fond memories of this game and thought it was the end-all and be-all of Pokemon, and that nothing would match up to it. Recently I picked it back up just for something casual and I have to say, the nostalgia goggles were strong on this one. Aside from some minor improvements (I always thought the Pokegear was a decent way to organize some key items like the map, phone and radio) and some post-game content that does stand up to scrutiny (but it still isn't as good as Platinum's post game) the game is a piece of shit. The selection of Pokemon in the first half of the game is garbage, the level-scaling is bad almost to the point of being game-breaking, hiding the national dex until you beat the elite four is pointless, the gym leaders almost all suck, the bug catching contest is nonsensical, the whole game is just a pile of fucking ass. I know my particular nostalgia now was more for the simpler times of playing the games with my friends, breeding mons and building battle teams for fun and competitive play, and that the game itself is actually garb. Have any of you found similar things when revisiting old games which you had fond memories of, or perhaps the opposite?
