>>43239607I already explained why Pokemon can afford to be serious when it wants to be. The whole concept of Pokemon is based on Monster Battling, whereas Yokai Watch is about distinctly Japanese-ish ghosts making people fart and stuff. (Meaning that Yokai Watch from the start has way less international appeal) Imagine Blue's Clues or the Bearstein Bears as a action movie of course it would never work. On the other hand, when Pokemon does stuff like Origins or Generations it looks natural because the initial format and the source material(the games) allow it. Hell, even the 1st fuckin' episode was pretty hardcore shounen with the scene where Ash faces off a flock of Spearows in the storm. Yokai Watch simply does not have the foumdation for that kind of stuff so it going edgy was desperate and misplaced straw grasping if anything, it wasn't the reason why Yokai Watch failed but rather a result of it's failure.
