Gen VI introduced Mega Evolutions, a new gimmick, with 28 Megas, which was eventually raised to 48. Gen VII introduced Regional Forms, a new gimmick, with 18 forms...and no indication that they intend to pursue the idea further. They really didn't do as much with the idea as they could or should have. There just aren't enough for people to really latch on to the idea.
