They're starter Pokemon. Their designs are crafted specifically to hold a strong appeal whether and marketability whether in a general sense that everyone can love or a particularly powerful object of interest that people can bond to and get passionate over. It's no surprise that anyone would love one.
However, in the end, there is no reason to care. Just like any other they are still simply Pokemon - if you like them then you do and if you don't like them then you don't. Keeping your starter on the team just because it is a starter is retarded but boxing it just because it is a starter manages to be just as, if not more retarded.
