If SM has a direct lead into SS like BW had for XY then Ash will more or less retain his current strength. The one consistent thing that happened between XY and SM was Pikachus strength - I don't think he's been properly beaten in battle yet, right?
If there's a sponsership gimmick like the leaks talked about Ash getting sponsored for a shitter team and vows to bring them into the spotlight for their belief in Pokemon bonds over brute strength would be a great story. It'd build his status and reputation about carrying the sponsor/team on his back while also giving him a secondary goal alongside the league.
