Instead of gyms you need to beat tournaments, there isnt a main plot but a bunch of small stories, some stuff change based on what you choose, there are some canon characters in the tournaments.
Around 400 mons in the regional dex, and at the start of the game you choose the region you come from and your favourite type, then get a starter based on that.
