My girl and I bought them together, along with the gen 2 remakes. She got super into it, imported her entire collection from Pearl later.
Sun/moon came out and put me off the franchise for a while. I didn't even finish the league.
We started playing again during the pikachu movie hype. I started pining for the older games, but didn't want to give up the online trading system. PokeMMO is exciting in that I can catch all the obscure assed pokemon I would have traded for otherwise. Breeding is a bit whack, but unless they implement wonder trade, I'll take a less involved process over mass release sessions.
