Honestly, I still believe Empire to be the peak of how to design a Pokemon game's battles, most gym leaders use unique and interesting strategies, the game even incentivizes you to use unorthodox strategies and moves to win, it honestly makes uses of the best thing about Pokemon which is variety, even the weakest Pokemon at times feel like they can be super useful for a few traits they have available.
