Okay so I saw the sub of the episode and the only thing I don't think I agree with is Goh's Philosophy. I get Ash's Philosophy its "Fight against strong Pokemon to understand who they are and how they are" kinda like letting your fist talk for you and having your dedication to battle show the real you. That makes sense to me in context of the Pokemon universe as well, because most Pokemon species battle for a living, so its understandable that you could gain a lot of understanding about a Pokemon from fighting it.
What I don't get is Goh's Philosophy, what does capturing a Pokemon teach you about them? Is it in reference to the Dex? Like you catch a Pokemon and it teaches you something about them? Like its very literal? Or is it something else? If its that something else, how? What do you gain from capturing something in a Pokeball that you couldn't have gained from fighting with them or interacting with them or just talking to them? TR's Meowth is a great example of this kinda thing, Jessie and James are friends with him and they didn't capture him, they just are very close and understand one another really well.
I must have missed something, this has to be referencing the Dex considering he said he wants to understand them all so he could 'reach' Mew who has the genes of all of them. Otherwise this makes very little sense?
