Well for starters, May only had Blaziken for 1 episode, and she wasn't even the first character in the anime to have one. Piplup is much more closely identified with Dawn than most other Pokémon are to their trainers
But regardless, its a bigger deal when the series is specifically about going to past regions. If they are going to meet a Piplup in the Sinnoh region without Dawn, than its pretty likely Dawn won't show up

Expecting Dawn to show up this early is just being ridiculous. Even in the camp in the beginning people were already guessing that Ash might not have even been in the same camp as Go and Koharu.

It is a big deal because they are doing a Piplup-centric episode without Dawn. Piplup is a big reason why Dawn's is popular in the first place. If you are planning bringing her back, why bother using Piplup this early?

There's a very real chance we're going to see one of Ash's older Pokémon in the episode before that, so it might not be that ridiculous. Plus the question is why have a Piplup centered episode without Dawn and then have another Piplup episode with Dawn. It doesn't make much sense to have this episode if they're going to use Dawn later on

The thing is with May, she didn't have that one BIG marketable pokemon every girl is known for:

Misty it was Psyduck and Togepi
Dawn was Piplup
Iris was Axew
Serena (Braixen, I guess?)
Lillie is Snowy

None of May's pokemon were ever given the mascot treatment, she never kept a pokemon out of its ball either in every episode. That's probably why May's pokemon don't really remind you of things when you see them with other trainers.

Although to be honest I associate Beautifly with May more than the Blaziken line due to being her first Contest pokemon

Man, the writers inexperience back in 2002 pretty much screwed out of May being marketed properly. Makes me kinda sad when I think about it, she definitely would have been promoted more if she was introduced later on. She didn't even get her ending theme song till AG had 30 eps left, whereas Dawn had it from the start and Serena got hers 30 eps in.

Misty now has Mega-Gyarados which nearly gave Pikachu a run for its money. And as the anon reminded me Serena was able to hold her own against Ash so I put her a little higher than I would’ve, plus May lost to Dawn
