I think some of my fondest memories about the game come from playing through it with other people in my year. One week everyone would be talking about getting to the Ruins and solving the tile puzzles. Then it would be about how tough Whitney's Miltank is. Then the burned tower with the dogs running away and the rare occasion that someone would run into one out in the world. And then people split east and west, so you'd have people taking the tough route through the caves and finding the lake of rage while others went to the light house and Cianwood. Shiny Gyarados, seeing Jasmine's Steelix, the hidden base behind the poster in the shady shop in Mahogany town. It was literally weeks of new discoveries, shared stories, the very rare instance of someone seeing a shiny Pokemon, people figuring out you could breed with a ditto for eggs, trading, people going back to earlier parts of the game with HMs and finding new parts of the Ruins, secret pathways, finding different Pokemon in different locations that you use headbutt. All without an easy way to use the internet to look stuff up, and even then people were coming up with all sorts of stories that weren't true or were only half true, so even outlandish things could be possible. And the time frame that the games came out, the dawn of the new millennium before 9/11 made everyone afraid and kind of crazy. We'll never get those days again...
