>then why have them?Because the playerbase has clearly shown they can be utilized to the extent they were meant to be used, but the main campaign fails to utilize these mechanics because of GameFreak's inability to program AI or actually challenge the player in fear of scaring off casuals and children alike. It's also why people are hoping for an honest hard mode that significantly revamps the game, rather than "lol make Pokemon have higher levels and maybe hold a Berry".
Casuals get their piss easy baby campaign, veterans get their campaign that actually tries to give them an experience they'd expect for their level of experience, and everyone is happy.
