Shadow Pokemon is a pretty annoying mechanic, but at least they come with good moves. The game's legitimately challenging which is not something you can generally say about Pokemon games, and Mt. Battle provides you with an interesting post-game.

I played it and accidentally killed shadow heracross. He never respawned so I threw the game out.

Pokemon XD is a great game. If you do plan on playing it, I'd recommend playing Colosseum first though since XD will render Colosseum unplayable.
