Platinum is the best by far of the fourth gen, soulsilver and heartgold are pretty faithful to the second gen so if you swing that way they are pretty fun, dont touch BW1 because its basically BW2 with less content.

If you like Johto then get HG/SS. They are probably my favorite games for that reason. Platinum was also good. I couldn't really get into BW but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get it. There were a lot of improvements I just didn't like the region.
