I didn't ship them until the Orange Islands episode with the Thunderbolt Starmie, where she decides to go with Ash instead of staying with whats-his-face.
Seemed pretty canon at that point.

I hate this so much. Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge, Erika, Koga, Blaine, and Sabrina all lacked personality and they didn't do much in the main story, they were just as full of personality as most gen 6 leaders until gen 2 came around. Giovanni was the only one with any personality and that's just because he's the leader of Team Rocket.
