For example, Rotom-W can do many things, tank physically or defensively, status, trick, and do decent damage, provide voltswitching, and act as a buffer to non-mold breaker Earthquakes. Lanturn however, can only do several of those, and not as efficiently as Rotom-W.
Now take this to the extreme, and you have the lower tiers and LC with pokemon with only 1 or 2 viable sets at most, only capable of filling one role. There isn't variety, or customization, the movepools are all considerably smaller, like Focus Blast and Draco Meteor basically not existing, and the abilities are very rarely any good, most of the time being filler, shit like own tempo and Keen Eye, while the item choices are either choice, eviolite, focus sash, or berry juice.
The lower in the tier's you go, ironically almost, the less teambuilding options you actually have, and that's where much of the aversion comes in. This in addition to many battles being decided purely by who the RNG favors with speed ties
