I actually like the first season. The characters didn't feel as much like cardboard cutouts as they do now and I feel like it took itself less seriously. There was some shit in the first season that they would never get away with now.

Badge 2: They heard about that shit and just decided to give him the fucking badge. Ash wasn't having any of that shit, so cue a giant vacuum cleaner destroying roughly a quarter of the gym.
Badge 3: Blew up the fucking gym.
Badge 4: Straight-up commited arson.
Badge 5: The gym was already rigged to blow up, using several Voltorb. Ash left peacefully, knowing full well what fate awaited it.
Badge 6: Fucking blew up the gym leader with a bomb.
Badge 7: Entire gym destroyed, using a volcano.
Badge 8: Blown up.

Despite destroying every gym he visited so that nobody else could get a badge after him, Gary still got ten.

it was a good motivation. It's a better motivation than "tee hee I want to star in pretty contest and/or contest rip off!" in third time in a row. Serena didn't even have a fucking goal for an embarrasing amount of time in the series and she didn't do jack shit for like the first 30-40 episodes except lust after Ash.

Misty was blander after she got togepi but I will still take her over amourbait any day of the week
