The first gym is
poison type, so psychic coverage comes in handy.
Also there's a machine in the lab that hands you a random poke as your starter. You can get things like ralts, and other stuff, from that machine.
Regardless, any starter will do decently over time IMO, since you can catch all kinds of helpful mons later on.
