So red/blue/yellow are the only Pokemon I've ever played but I'm thinking of playing through the series. Should I play them all in order of release? Should I skip the older ones and just play their remakes?

I recommend playing the remakes, in the order the originals were released.

>FR/LG
>HG/SS
>AS/OR
>D/P/Pt
>B/W
>B2/W2
>X/Y

If you don't have access to a GBA or DS/DS Lite, maybe stick to R/B/Y on Virtual Console. You'll be able to transfer those pokemon up to Sun/Moon sometime next year.

The only drawback is going back to D/P/Pt on the DS after playing AS/OR on 3DS.

Play the third edition of every game. Start with Fire Red/Leaf Green, then play Emerald, move to HeartGold/SoulSilver, then play Platinum.

With B/W and B2/W2 you can play both because they're actually different games, albeit taking place in the same region. You even explore areas that weren't in one another and vice versa.

Then play X/Y. Play the remakes of Gen 3 at your own peril.

Also was gonna emulate them since I don't own any handhelds.

Ruby and Sapphire is one exception, I'd recommend playing Emerald instead of the 3DS remakes because Gamefreak goofed up for real with those remakes. HeartGold and SoulSilver have the extra Crystal content along with the original Gold/Silver, along with a Battle Frontier. ORAS lacks the Emerald content and they removed the Battle Frontier.

Diamond and Pearl lack a remake, but as usual you should just play the third version: Platinum.

My list (>>28754239) assumes you want to keep the pokemon you catch, which you can't do with Gold/Silver or R/B/Y outside of Virtual Console. If you're emulating games you can still keep pokemon from most games (someone check me on Gen I/II), since you can extract .pkm files and inject them into other games.

I would still recommend OR/AS, if only for a legitimate way to capture Deoxys, but you could also save that for if you want to play more after finishing the rest.

ORAS is a disappointment compared to how good FRLG and HGSS were as remakes even if they didn't fix the level balance in HGSS' case

The only new "content" ORAS brought over was a silly extra plotline with parallel dimensions and the possibility to go around catching a lot of legendaries.

ORAS new content pales in comparison to the content Emerald had that they axed.

The food court is way more frantic and a lot harder than the XY restaurants. You get a number of turns and need to do everything in that set to really break even.

The XY one you get a set number of turns each battle and can break even even if you botch it. The only exception is the High Roller Sushi place where you can't break even unless you stack max opower, a money item, and happy hour.

They just feel so different. I don't see why anyone compares them.

I just purposely didn't count the less important stuff.

Sure, we can count stuff like Teachy TV, I forgot that, but the rest of things are too small, and you are making them seem big so they can rival ORAS.

Also, what's new about the Safari Zone? We have plenty of them in every game.

If you want to count the SZ as a new feature just because it changed a few small details, we would also have to count Super Secret Bases and Contest Spectacular, because those also change some significant things from the RSE contest and bases

So, yes, ORAS is still winning by a huge margin new content wise...

That depends on how you define quality. Needless to say some of the Frontier's facilities rubbed people the wrong way. Especially the Palace.

Considering Emerald was a major change and GSC was barren of content to begin with?

You tell me. Unlike GSC, RS had something of it's own.
Also FR/LG wasn't a Yellow remake or even incorporated elements of it into it so HG/SS remains as the odd one out here.
