Because Ultra Ball is already taken in English. No idea why they didn't go with the Super and Hyper motif like everyone else.

This is one of the reasons you should never make pointless changes in a localization.

It'll come back back to bite you in the ass sooner or later. Don't fuck with what the original creators intended unless it's really necessary.

This. Reminder that all of the questionable changes in localization were made by one idiot at the top of the localization team who thought he knew best (Speed Star became Swift, Barrierd became Mr. Mime, etc.).

Watch/read the Nob Ogasawara interviews sometime. It sheds some very good insight on this topic.

He wasn't allowed to touch anything that was in all caps in Gens 1/2. So NPC names, Pokemon names, location names and item names were localized by somebody else. That somebody else is a fucking idiot who mistranslated a bunch of shit and Nob was never given a chance to fix it.

Because those refer to fetishes and American localization team didn't want any fetishes in pokemon. That's why UB-02 EXPANSION is ABSORPTION in English.

I don't get why the English version hasn't fixed it's translation over time like other versions. The Spanish and other versions version have made a lot of adjustements over time to adapt to new games, I bet they renamed the Ultra Bola to Hiper Bola to make space for this new type of ball. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't (hope someone can confirm).

English just apply a bandaids over bandaids to everything.
