Do any of you still play HG/SS regularly? I can't get enough of them. I think these were the peak of the series.

I replayed the series except Hoenn last year for the 20th anniversary, and had a general distaste for HGSS by the end of my HG run. Did a lot of things I didn't care for with GSC, what I did like was underdone, tries but doesn't go the full distance to truly fix any of the problems with GSC, and none of its additions caught me.

I'm in a near constant state of playing through my set of 6-7 games and have been for many months. So far I've done 6 HeartGold runs, so me.

HeartGold was my first Pokemon game that I actually owned, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart.

I've played SS earlier this year and dropped it after Pryce and Radio Tower out of boredom. Tried to get back few days ago and beat Clair but left it again after that

By far my favorite games. They really went all out on the visuals and it feels like they really tried to create a unique experience. You can tell GF was mastering the tools they had. Following pokemon will always be a plus for me. Also, that arceus event.
Just lookin at screenshots makes me wosh the series never went 3ds. It just falls flat in that market and nothing stands out.

Could never get past the Elite Four too because the game was so grindy and I just moved onto something else.Forget Kanto, with its underlevelled half baked quality.
HGSS is overrated.

I bought bought SS a few months ago cheap (for a Pokemon game anyway) for $35 Canadian. I haven't played it yet but I used to love playing Gold as a kid and haven't played it in year's, so maybe when I get to playing it, it might feel like I'm kinda playing Gold for the first time again.

No. I mean i rarely touch Pokemon games when the next gen comes out and never replayed them outside RBY but i still get 300+ hours in every game. Except HG.
HG i have like 60. It's the most boring Pokemon game in my opinion and i will never play it again. I even had to force myself to finish it. Didn't even care for the Frontier because the main game wasn't good enough to keep me interested.

Love the atmosphere. It's so fucking /comfy/. I always end up abandoning my playthroughs because the Pokemon selection is shit and the level curve is horrendous. Gyms 1-7 are a joke, and then Gym 8 and the Elite Four are hell. After that, Gyms 9-16 are easy as fuck, and Red takes forever to beat if you're not powergaming.

My favorites too, definitely the peak for me. I recently finished a playthrough on SS and enjoyed it even more than in 2010.
I'm going to try to complete the pokedex between SS and Platinum as much as possible, also getting gold prints on the BF which is a long term goal, Hall will piss me off hard.

I'm also interested in playing the drayano versions for added challenge, going to do that soon, loved his gen 5 hacks.

I actually planned to stop playing Pokemon around the time HGSS launched, and to make it my final game. Seemed fitting as not only was it the ultimate Pokemon game in terms of content, but also a remake of my first gen, would have been a nice bookend.
"Surely the series can't get any better than this" I thought, and I think I was kind of right and should have gone through with it. BW2 was another high spot but that's it, it hasn't been worth it to keep up with the series at all otherwise.

I think that difficulty is not as important of an argument, but my problem is that the game doesnt make me explore, every place feels empty imo (after the 2nd gym)
Rocket is a joke in Johto, they seem kinda absent. I do enjoy a lot of things in the games, but they are the ones I have the hardest time trying to replay.

I loved GSC when I was a kid. Played it inside out. They had flaws, but when you're a kid you overlook all of them, and you have the patience to grind and grind, and grind...

HGSS did nothing to fix those flaws, merely migrating them onto a slower engine and adding some bells and whistles to make the whole experience /comfy/. Scratch beneath the surface of the sheer boatload of gimmicks and it's basically a lazy redo. As an adult I can see right through it.

Other 2D Games (except DP) that came after GSC had far more engaging plots and level progression without abandoning the core ethos of the series.

The whole Johto region has this ancient eastern feel to it, tons of comfy areas, and the little slides that pop up right when you enter a new area a la LeafGreen are great. Returning to Kanto, the many different Pokeballs, and fighting Red are also big selling points for me.
Also has my favorite legendaries, Ho Oh and Raikou.
I will always love HeartGold. Johto or bust.

HGSS started the trend of removing features and not fixing problems of older games. Emerald had everything RS had and more. DP had everything Emerald and more (bar 2 things, but brought back things from GSC too), Platinum had everything DP had and more (including the 2 things DP didn't have from Emerald). HGSS though, has barely anything from Platinum. And BW neither. Nor XY. Or SM. Or USUM. And ORAS only has stuff from RS. Not Emerald, DP or Platinum. And no game has what HGSS introduced.

HGSS are good games, but I will never stop blaming them for being the beginning of the franchise going downhill. Just imagine what the franchise would've been like if HGSS and BW didn't remove everything from RSE/DPPt.

I enjoy HGSS, I think they have the best presentation in the series and a lot of the flaws are exaggerated (such as the level curve, which isn't much worse than most other games in the series). However I prefer to replay the gen 3 games since they have a much smoother engine and less unskippable dialogue than anything from gen 4 onwards.

This guys correct. DS games run smooth like butter on Drastic. Also, if you pick up a bluetooth controller (like $10) it's even better.
Drayano hacks fix a lot of problems HGSS had as well as being fairly interesting to boot, you can also move your pokes to SM if you have a flash cart.
