To be fair Sneasel only sucked because you got it extremely late in game.

Early game Sneasel literally breaks the johto gym leader challenge.

gen 3 to gen 4 - physical/special split gave it stab moves off it's attack stat
gen 4 to gen 5 - speed boost
gen 5 to gen 6 - a fucking mega
gen 6 to gen 7 - psychic fangs is pretty nice
