1- being grass type
2- also being "poison" type
most people don't like these two types.
sure Venusaur doesn't look the coolest but it certainly isn't as bad Exeggutor and still people like the later because it has Psychic and Dragon as a secondary typing.
Losing 2 weaknesses with its mega is what made Venusaur more popular.
people take typing too seriously in pokemon.
