Now maybe it's because I'm used to JRPGs having a shit ton of cutscenes, but the plenitude of cutscenes in and of themselves did bother me that much. More so it was the lackluster story itself that bothered me.

What don't you like about the cutscenes? They're part of the "story" and desu are preferable to pressing A through a ton of reading.

There's always sequences you've had to sit back and watch though; the dogs running away, Kyogre/Groudon, Dialga/Palkia/Giratina, all the lake trio shit etc.

Only now we dont have to watch it play out in sprite form.

Cutscenes in older games didn't last as long as they do in USUM/SM.

Pokémon isn't a franchise known for its in-depth and deep story-telling.

There's some old cutscene/sequences that last a while. The spear pillar and distortion world section, most of the BW story related content, and a ton of sections where you're just listening to people talk like most of the Cynthia, Steven and Lance bits.

And if you're gonna call out gen 7 you've got to include Gen 6. There were some long arse X/y cutscenes and the section in ORAS after catching Groudon/Kyogre is unforgivable.

I still like them. I'd rather they improved the story itself than remove the cutscenes or scale them back.

The cutscenes in XY don't even compare to SM/USUM. They actually had relevance. Same with ORAS.

There's a reason shit like league of legends and vanilla WoW are so popular. It's all game, no filler. There's story text hidden around or in the menus, and story/character plot videos on youtube.

They don't interrupt your fucking game half way through to show a cutscene of a character running up and talking about masaladas.

There are small flash game communities left over from the old-internet if you're interested. Might be hard to find them on big company search engines nowadays but they're out there.

When a company creates great games that gradually get worse people get salty that what they used to like is now ruined.

Barely any play the modern version though, some chinese company shitted it up. Also the oldschool version got a bit worse as they updated it and lost some players (which they said originally they wouldn't be doing)

I think it's kind of a recent development because consoles have a shitton of power and they're pressured to use it all.

I'm still mad they had fucking awesome Ultra Beasts and never insert them in the plot, Lillie and these stupid trials killed the game for me.
It could be a lot better if SM was the SMT of Pokemon and the main antagonist turned into Ultra Beasts and you battle them.

Those games sell really well because of advertising and crap, but stuff that is a great concept and pure gaming fun outlasts it all in the long run.

Look at the twitch lists and amongst the flavor of the month trash there are legit great games like Diablo II and Age of Empires that are going on 20-30 years old now.
