Yes, you should bother grinding Growlithe. You don't need to trade to evolve it, and it has Ghost + Psychic coverage. If you roll a Growlithe that gets high-power HP Grass, it will blow through anything.

Magmar is faster and can use a lot more tms like thunder punch and psychic so it's better than growlithe

But you need to trade to get its evolution, unlike Growlithe, where you just need to use a Fire Stone. And unlike Magmortar, Arcanine gets Extreme Speed.

Well then, there's just one option: Growlithe. Arcanine is the only Pokémon in the games to get Extreme Speed in Gold and Silver.

Get Magmar. You're losing out on a little Def, HP and extremespeed but Magmar gets Psychic and Thunderpunch for better special coverage.

Non-Stab ES is overrated. 93 speed in Gen 2 is really not that slow.

You can't evolve Growlithe until Kanto though. Even with no Magmortar, Magmar is pretty fine for campaign himself. He was originally meant as the final in his line anyways.

Bro, in like the 500+ hours I played GSC as a kid, I don't remember getting many calls for items. Only one who did was the Lass on the same route with the Ampharos and I don't even remember what it was.

Currently my team is Feraligatr lv32, Bellsprout lv15 which I neglected but use a HM slave for Cut, Magmar lv18, Sudowoodo lv21 and Ampharos lv31.
