actually, wouldn't mind an even more assholish rival. what if it's your big sibling who hates you always stealing their thunder, or a new evil team recruit who is determined to win favour by fucking things up for you? would love for the current 'rival' formula to be shaken up and go back tot he roots a bit.

You mean the roots where the rival is constantly giving you helpful advice? The only times Blue is a dick is when you get the map, when you got in Lavander Town's tower, and when you fight him in Silph.

that'd be great too, someone who doesn't give a damn about you anymore than any other random trainer, and who you're the one always vying for their attention. someone who is the protagonist of their own story while you're not looking, not just someone who exists to be the side character in yours, or the mary sue plot driver.
