What type of bug is it? Are there insects/animals in the pokemon universe that aren't pokemon or is parasect any bug pokemon that gets infected?

so far only Paras itself has the mushroom specific to its evolving into Parasect
now that i think about it, GF probably should think about implementing an uninfected Paras evo. Paras can then only evolve as Parasect while holding a Big Mushroom or soemthing

As Paras, the bug is a Pokemon and the mushrooms aren't. As Parasect, the mushrooms mutate into a Pokemon and the bug Pokemon dies.

Paras is born with the mushrooms intact.
Therefore, it can be assumed that Paras is both the bug and the mushrooms. Similar to how "you" are both your left brain and your right brain.
When Paras evolves, the mushroom-Paras takes over and the bug-Paras plays only a physically supportive role, much like how humans' right brains work as we grow older.

In the same way that the Pokédex references Shellder biting Slowpoke tails yet depicting an as-yet unavailable shellfish, I suspect the bug part of Paras is the equivalent of a Nincada.

Which makes it even more sad when you consider that part of Nincada’s fate is to either wind up as a living-dead shell, or as a living-dead zombie slave to the mushroom.

Hell, maybe that quality is what allows Paras and Parasect to exist, in retcon logic.
