The hairstyle makes it clear that this Eevee is promoting LGPE

It'll know Buzzy Buzz, Sizzly Slide, and Bouncy Bubble, and be able to use Veevee Volley

Plus Ash has a Normalium Z that he doesn't use anymore, so he could use it with this Eevee

That doesn't mean it couldn't also promote a new evolution.

Gens 2, 4, and 6 each had a new Eeveelution. Maybe they'll market a new one for 8 like Sylveon was done for 6. Would make a nice segue after LGPE.

It all depends

If there's a new Eeveelution next gen then yeah, Ash will probably keep it and it'll evolve when he takes it to the Gen 7 region

If not, it'll just remain unevolved (though this is likely anyway since they want to make Eevee into a secondary mascot alongside Pikachu)

Umbreon was almost Poison-type and we have no way of knowing whether Fairy would've been Physical or Special if it were introduced pre-DP. Remember Dark was Special despite the fact that every pre-existing Dark attack became Physical.

I think it would only work if Eevee gets a new evo in gen 8. Idk it would just be weird to me to give Ash the Eevee for LGPE when he already has Pikachu, and for him to have a pokemon known for evolving, and then it not evolve, without it having some sort of major gimmick to it (aside from it being a mascot).

Unless one of Eevee's evolutions had not been showcased well before and the only ones this applies to is Leafeon and Espeon. Espeon making the most sense since Gary and Gladion have Umbreon, and Ash is Red's counterpart, and he has an Espeon.

This Eevee can work as promotion for both. He can be a shill for Let's Go and when that's over and Ash and Pikachu leave Alola to travel to gen 8's region, he can go with them, evolve, and showcase the new eeveelution.
